Whale Watching

Just eight miles off Provincetown lies Stellwagen Bank, a highly productive feeding ground (and the country's first National Marine Sanctuary) that attracts whales from April until late fall to rest, frolic and indulge in its ample supply of plankton and small fish. Curious and unafraid, the whales loll about, play with their young and flirt with the parade of boats, creating one of the greatest natural attractions this region can offer. A naturalist on board identifies whale types, explains their behavior and answers all of the questions you may have. Whale watching is among the most popular and exciting adventures available on the Cape. Trips run from April to October. Spring and fall are said to be the best to observe these marvelous creatures, but in summer three trips leave daily from the Provincetown wharf. Leave late in the day and you may experience both whales and a sunset. Bring warm clothes, even in summer. Three whale-watching boats operate out of Provincetown, each offering several daily three-hour excursions. Call ahead to the Ranger V (508-487-3322), the Portuguese Princess (508-487-2651), or the Dolphin Fleet (508-349-1900) for necessary reservations; tickets may be purchased at booths on MacMillan Wharf or at the head of the pier.

Kayak/canoe the Pamet River

Catch the tide an hour or so after High Tide and drop in a kayak, canoe or inflatable into the Pamet River behind the Post Office in Truro--don't worry it gets wider--and paddle your way along the meandering Pamet River (with the help of the current) for a 1.5 mile (as the crow flies) ride to the Pamet Harbor. If you wish continue out the mouth of the harbor to Corn Hill Beach to meet up with your friends or family for a ride home.
